The past week a record breaking winter storm practically shut down Texas. Power outages and no running water have left Texas and other parts of the South still feeling the effects of a deep freeze that swept the region the past week. On Friday, power had been restored to nearly two million homes across Texas. Although there were still 325,000 Texans without power.

“More than 800 public water systems serving 162 of the state’s 254 counties had been disrupted as of Thursday, affecting 13.1 million people,” according to a spokeswoman for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

The Houston Food Bank is collecting donations to help feed people who are being greatly affected by the hazardous weather. A total of 150 meals can be provided with a donation of $50 according to the organization. The Austin Disaster Relief Network is accepting donations in order to provide people with emergency housing, gift cards, and supplies for short as well as long-term needs. Getting food to people in need can be difficult, especially when the cold strains local energy grids. Organizations that are on the ground and helping feed people include the North Texas Food Bank, the San Antonio Food Bank, which serves southwestern Texas, and Feeding Texas, which partners with nearly two dozen food banks throughout the state.

There were 45 flight delays and about two dozen cancellations at Boston Logan International Airport early on Friday morning. In Texas, where millions of residents lost power during the week’s powerful storm, a delivery of more than 400,000 first doses and 330,000 second doses was delayed in anticipation of the bad weather. There are still more than 60 million people under winter weather alerts across the US and over 25 million under a hard freeze warning.

At least 161 counties in Texas have been affected by the disruptions. Winter storms in Texas have impacted the distribution of meals at schools for thousands of children and their families. In Houston, the last meal was distributed on February 13 and this could have impacted about 200,000 people, according to Grenita Lathan who is Superintendent of the Houston Independent School District.
