Putting Barbie on the big screen was not on many people’s bingo cards, but from scrapped 2016 scripts to every brand being plastered with hot pink and glitter in collaboration with the hit toy, it’s finally and officially out. Greta Gerwig’s creation has, without a doubt, taken the internet by storm. Barbie isn’t just a movie about the blonde, blue-eyed doll – it holds greater depths and intricate symbolism that resonates with women around the world.
Barbie doesn’t have a singular miss throughout its two-hour run. You get enthralled into Barbieland alongside every character you meet. Whether it be Ryan Gosling attempting a serenade singing Matchbox Twenty, or America Ferrera having an emotional and powerful monologue, every person and or doll are memorable and crafted beautifully and comedically perfect. It’s not a movie that feels incomplete or messy or one that doesn’t stay in your mind for the rest of the night and suddenly it’s been a week and you’re still coming back to it. You’re seeing it again, talking about it, and more or less being inspired by it. Barbie IS that movie. It’s a breath of fresh air and a nod to nostalgia all in one way that doesn’t feel forced but a warm hug. Barbie ranges from witty, unexpected humor to feeling represented in a world that makes you feel silenced and misunderstood. It showcases childhood, adolescence, and womanhood in a meaningful way that’s never been done before.
Not only are your heart and soul happy while enjoying the film, but your eyes are also. The cinematography and sets were done with full effort and time well spent; they aren’t hard to look at. The movie’s coloring conveys different messages and emotions to the audience in a soft, enchanting way. The sets are realistic and seem to come straight from your very own imagination. The clothing and special effects aren’t to be overlooked either. Every aspect of this movie was meticulously done, and it pays off. You feel a part of the world Gerwig has crafted by every little detail, feeling the characters’ emotions and seeing parts of you in them. Moviegoers can expect stunning performances and talent in all areas of the film, as Barbie goes above and beyond what anyone could’ve hoped for. It sets a new standard for cult classics, characters to the big screen, and blending comedy with empowering messages within cinema.
Barbie doesn’t disappoint but rather flies high with its pivotal takeaways and dreamy design. For those debating seeing it, the answer is yes. And for those worrying about expectations not being met, Barbie will pleasantly surpass them. It’s a movie that finds its way for everyone and sticks with you for the long run. It’s certainly something you’ll come back to for comfort, for a laugh, or a much-needed cry. To sum it up: Barbie was more than Kenough for our last piece in 2023 and will become a true classic film, and we could not be happier. We rate it 10 horses out of 10, for patriarchy, of course.
