Michigan Officer Fatally Shoots Black Man
April 15, 2022
On April 4, 2022 Patrick Lyoya was shot by a police officer. 26-year-old Lyoya was stopped during a traffic stop and was approached by an officer. Lyoya resisted and ran, soon being caught up to. This happened in the span of two minutes: once caught up to, Lyoya was pinned to the ground, unarmed, the officer promptly pulled out his gun and fatally shot Patrick Lyoya in the head.
As CBS News interviews Patrick’s family, we find out they fled the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2014 for a better life here in America. The father of Patrick Lyoya said his son was “killed like an animal.” Peter Lyoya, father of Patrick Lyoya, came here to save his family, yet the people that were supposed to be protecting Patrick’s life, are the ones that took his life.
Grand Rapids police officials are conducting a “full review” of the incident. Authorities have declined to identify the officer who shot Lyoya but said he joined the department in 2015 and has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation proceeds.
Protest soon broke out with the videos of the shooting being released in their entirety. Marching the streets of Grand Rapids with signs and the attitude of justice. Using unnecessary, excessive use of deadly force is a sickening common theme in today’s police.
Patrick’s family said they planned to file a lawsuit, likely in federal court, over the killing of a man they described as quiet, loving and supportive of his parents and siblings.
