NATO and Its Connection With the Russia and Ukraine Conflict

What is NATO?

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is known for its peaceful resolution of disputes. NATO is a collective security defensive alliance and consists of thirty members, including: Bulgaria, Germany, The United Kingdom, The United States, France, Greece, Hungary, and many more. NATO was created by the United States, Canada, and several Western European nations on April 4, 1949 in Washington, D.C. to provide collective security against the Soviet Union. It was also the first peacetime military alliance the United States entered outside of the Western Hemisphere.

Ukraine, an independent, peaceful, and democratic country, is a close partner with NATO. Ukraine is not a member of NATO, but has expressed a desire to join. According to the NATO page, the alliance has called on Russia to cease its military assault, to withdraw all its forces from Ukraine, and to turn back from the path of aggression it has chosen.

How is NATO helping Ukraine?

Most members of NATO and the European Union are funneling arms into the Ukraine to fight off Russian invaders. “… NATO is also moving military equipment and as many as 22,000 troops into member states bordering Russia and Belarus,” says Steven Erlanger, a writer for New York Times.

The Washington Post states that President Biden announced he had authorized additional forces to deploy to Germany and Poland. NATO reassures that they will continue to provide political and practical support for Ukraine as it carries on with defending itself.
