Moves Made at The NBA Trade Deadline
February 11, 2022
The NBA trade deadline was 3 p.m. on February 10th. Teams who are looking to make a playoff push or blow up their rosters in hopes of a high draft pick have until then to make their moves.
The biggest trade that happened was the move that sent James Harden and Paul Millsap to Philadelphia and Ben Simmons to Brooklyn. The 76ers also sent Seth Curry, Andre Drummond, and two first round picks to Brooklyn. This trade means a lot for both teams. The Nets and 76ers were already favorites to win the championship for most fans, but this move increases the chances for both teams. The duo of James Harden and Joel Embiid is going to be dangerous for Philadelphia. For Brooklyn, this move adds them a good defensive wing in Ben Simmons, a great shooter in Seth Curry, and an upgrade at center with Andre Drummond. These teams playoff runs will be interesting, and it is exciting to see Ben Simmons play basketball for the first time this season.
The Charlotte Hornets sent second year player Vernon Carey Jr. and veteran point guard Ish Smith to the Washington Wizards for Montrezl Harrell. This is a fantastic move for the Hornets. Vernon Carey Jr was not getting playing time on the Hornets and the Ish Smith move opens up more minutes for the rookie James Bouknight. Harrell is definitely an upgrade for the Hornets as they can now have a spark plug off the bench who is a good rim runner and rebounder. The second unit consisting of Kelly Oubre Jr., PJ Washington, and Montrezl Harrell is very good for the Hornets as they look to make a playoff push.
The Dallas Mavericks sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Washington Wizards for Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans. This move signals the end of an era for the Mavericks who traded for Porzingis in 2019. Spencer Dinwiddie will make a good backcourt partner for Luka Doncic, and Bertans will most likely not see playing time.
The Indiana Pacers sent Domantas Sabonis, Jeremy Lamb, Justin Holiday, and a 2023 second round pick to the Sacramento Kings for Tyrese Haliburton, Buddy Hield, and Tristan Thompson. This is a confusing move for the Sacramento Kings. Tyrese Haliburton is a promising second-year player and trading him instead of De’Aaron Fox makes very little sense. For the Pacers, this means they are going into a full rebuild. Trading their two-time All Star for a young guard means that they have hopes of a lottery pick this season.
The Portland Trailblazers traded CJ McCollum, Larry Nance Jr., and Tony Snell to the New Orleans Pelicans for Josh Hart, Tomas Satoransky, Nickeil Alexander-Walker, Didi Louzada, a protected first round pick, and two second round picks. This move sees the Blazers open up salary cap so they can make moves when Damian Lillard returns and it also sees the Pelicans have an excellent lineup for whenever Zion Williamson returns.
The Cleveland Cavaliers traded Ricky Rubio, a first round pick, and two second round picks to the Indiana Pacers for Caris LeVert and a second round pick. This move is more conformation that the Pacers are going into a rebuild, but this is a fantastic move for the Cavaliers. LeVert will act in the spot of Colin Sexton, who got injured earlier this season. The Cavilers are the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference right now and they look to make a deep playoff run with such a young team.
This was one of the most exciting trade deadlines in recent memory as more teams than ever have championship aspirations.
