Saving Private Ryan Review and Analysis

Tricia Blackwood, Staff Writer

Saving Private Ryan  is a mostly fictional version of the Niland brother’s story during their fight in World War 2. The movie was directed and produced by Steven Spielberg, staring famous actors Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Vin Diesel, and many others. The film was written for the real life Niland brothers, Edward, Preston, Fredrick, and Robert. The movie walks through their story and their experience through the war. Saving Private Ryan begins with elderly, post war, “Private Ryan” leading a crowd of people to the beach of Normandy and the grave site from the soldiers lost during the fight. Then there is a change of setting that transitions back to the war, through Captain Miller’s eyes, leading his people to fight for America and save James Ryan (Fredrick Niland), who had been taken hostage

Saving Private Ryan was created by the inspiration of the Niland brother’s story, specifically Fredrick Niland, who is considered “Private James Ryan” in the movie. This movie has crucial parts of history that take one back in time as if they are there themselves. In the beginning, James Ryan walking through the graves of all the American lives lost at the Normandy fight is heartbreakingThe pain in Ryan’s eyes is so deep, all those lives were his friends and family, and the thousands of lives lost brought him back in time. Hearing stories of how bad the battle was, is nothing compared to putting visuals to it and finally seeing just how terrible things truly were. The loss was so awful that the beach waves that the tide pulled in had all turned to blood. So many people were injured and dying, and others had no choice but to keep moving and keep fighting. Another scene that can cause a roller coaster of emotions is when Captain Miller and his soldiers find James Ryan, but then come to find out that it was a different James Ryan. They had almost reached the point of joy that they had been working towards, only to find out they still had a long way to go. The excitement of finally finding Ryan, and yet it wasn’t even him.

The film is very historically correct, as far as showing how terrible World War 2 was, and it is very educational in that aspect. The Movie, Saving Private Ryan, is also a very action and drama filled film. The film has a lot to unpack, and a great story to tell. Most have given Saving Private Ryan wonderful reviews, as it is a great movie. Saving Private Ryan deserves the recognition and the good reviews that is has received. The movie was worth the watch, and worth the recognition.  I highly recommend this movie.
