Do you enjoy reading or listening to books, but don’t like not being able to finish them in a day? Well, if so, short stories are for you! Sometimes trying to read a whole book in a short amount of time can be difficult and honestly not an achievable goal. Then, if you can’t finish a story in a day or short amount of time, it leaves you with the wonders of how the story will end, or will this character make it, or whatever it may be, but you have to wait until days later to find out. I know for me when I find out something is going to happen or is about to happen, I want to know every single detail. So, since we all have extremely busy lives, reading short stories might be the better option for you! Short stories are written so that you can enjoy a whole story in one to very few sittings. They aren’t too short and they aren’t too long either. They are good stories with good meanings in them but they don’t take you weeks to read like an entire book! For instance, if you are wanting a good story to read one day but don’t want to commit to an entire book, or you want to be able to finish the story in one day, short stories could be for you!

We actually are focusing and learning about short stories right now in my English 101 and 102 class. We have read multiple ones that are really good and have even pulled at our heart strings a little while reading them. I will list these below, along with some authors that write very well, organized, and interesting short stories you could check out!

Authors:
– Flannery O’ Connor
– Jamaica Kincaid
– Eugenia Collier
– Anton Chekhov
– Katherine Mansfield
– Alice Munro
– John Cheever
– Mavis Gallant
– Deborah Eisenburg
– Denis Johnson

Some I have read in class:
– Girl by Jamaica Kincaid
– A Good Man is Hard to Find by Flannery O’ Connor
– Marigolds by Eugenia Collier

(there were a few more but these have been my favorites)
