How George Floyd’s Death is Continuing to Make an Impact
April 14, 2021
The George Floyd murder case is about a black American named George Floyd who died by the fault of a Minneapolis police officer. This tragic story began when a Cup Food’s employee called 9-1-1 to report that 46-year-old, George Floyd, had purchased a pack of cigarettes with a counterfeit 20-dollar bill, and was also reported to be drunk. Two employees had requested for Floyd to return the cigarettes, but he refused.
The first officers to arrive were Thomas Lane and J Alexander Kueng. Lane drew his gun at Floyd, and Floyd was very respectful and complied to the police, so he put his gun away. The officers proceeded to handcuff Floyd and sit him down, Floyd was still behaving very well and very calm. Later, another two officers came to the scene to join Lane and Kueng, these officers were Derek Chauvin, and Tao Thao. Chauvin took the lead of the case at hand. The four attempted to put Floyd into the back seat of the cop car, but Kueng struggled.
Minutes later, a video was taken of Chauvin dragging Floyd out of the backseat, where he then fell to the pavement with his chest to the ground. Chauvin began to put pressure on Floyd’s neck, this lasted for 7 minutes and 46 seconds. Before death, Floyd begged for Chauvin to remove pressure, screaming “I can’t breathe.” However, Chauvin did not care and was completely unbothered.
Fire department medics stated that, Floyd was reported unresponsive and without a pulse at 9:25pm on May 25, 2020. Darnella Fraizer was an innocent 17-year-old, who just so happened to have been a witness to everything. She recorded what happened to Floyd and posted it. The video went viral immediately.
The morning after Floyd’s death, all four officers were fired from the Minneapolis police force. Weeks later, on July 23, 2020 the chief police officer decided to further their punishment and asked the FBI to investigate. He stated that “Chauvin knew what he was doing. This was murder.” On September 8, all four of the officer’s attorney’s filed objections to the prosecution plan and requested that all four defendants be trialed together beginning on March 8.
Justice for George Floyd is still playing out across America, as the Black live matters movement has spread tremendously due to the tragic death of Floyd. For months, protesters have been spreading awareness and awakening people to the racial profiling and injustice in America. To this day, Floyd’s family and friends continue to speak out about his tragic death and hoe he deserved better in an attempt to get justice and help others get the awareness and justice they deserve. Not only in America, but everywhere, people have begun to classify strictly by race and judge one another by their race as an act of racism and stereotyping.
Racism is extremely terrible, and we as humans need to continue to bring awareness to the touchy subject, as we were all created equally in the image of God. Keeping up this awful behavior, and normalizing such a thing should have never began to be tolerated, and should stop now. Not only does George Floyd’s family deserve justice for his death, but so does everyone else who deals with the harshness of racism. We as people need to do better and become aware of ourselves and our actions. We are equal, we all deserve love, life, and a good well-being, without the hatred of this cruel world. The cruelty towards one another has got to stop, and it should not have been brought to the media by a man’s death. We need justice.
