Sarah McBride, who won Tuesday’s state senate election in Delaware, will be serving as America’s first transgender state senator. She ran for the Democratic Party and won about 73% of the vote.

McBride has a extensive political career. She was the first transgender staffer when she interned at the White House under the Obama administration. In 2013, she advocated for the passage of Delaware’s gender identity non-discrimination act, which was signed into law that year.

McBride ran on expanding access to health care and paid leave, increasing Delaware’s minimum wage, and reforming the criminal justice system.
McBride, a former spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign, tweeted on Tuesday: “I hope tonight shows an LGBTQ kid that our democracy is big enough for them, too, As Delaware continues to face the Covid crisis, it’s time to get to work to invest in the policies that will make a difference for working families.”
