The year 2000 was a year many people will never forget. Technology had advanced so much during the twentieth century, and people were excited to see where it would lead. The mobile phone was just starting to advance, and nearly half of American homes had internet access. At the turn of the century, many people felt as though they were entering the future.

The Y2K problem, also known as the Millennium bug, caused great havoc as many people feared that computers would stop working on December 31, 1999 when the dates changed to a new century. Obviously, nothing happened.

The clothing style from the year 2000 was born out of the rise of fast fashion, which is cheap and trendy clothing based on the most recent trends. Technology also had a large impact on fashion during this time. Many clothing items had shiny black tones and reflective metallics. Popular women’s clothing included mesh tops, leather skirts, shiny pants, and sparkly shoes. Leather jackets, a dress shirt, and chunky shoes made up much of men’s fashion at the time. Casual clothing in 2000 included lots of denim.

There was a presidential election in the year 2000 between Republican George W. Bush and the vice president to Bill Clinton at the time, Democrat Al Gore. Bush won the election with 271 electoral votes.

In professional sports at the time, Venus Williams became the first black woman to win the Women’s Singles title at Wimbledon since Althea Gibson. Tiger Woods became the first pro-golfer since Ben Hogan to win three majors in a calendar year and it was the first time ever that the Olympics was held in Australia. This is where the then 15-year old Michael Phelps made his debut as an American swimmer.

In the year 2000, Gaffney High School was getting ready to move into the new building on Twin Lake Road. The principal at the time was Bill James. Senior student officers included LaQuisha Bonner, the president, Carol Hulsey, the vice president, Jennifer Hamrick, the secretary, and Margaret Love, the treasurer. Mr. GHS was Steven Blanton and Miss Cherokeean was Tiffany Jefferies. The yearbook of that year was dedicated to Mrs. Shimer.
