What You Need To Know About Amy Coney Barrett

After the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the Supreme Court will be adding a new judge to one of its seats.

It is stated in the Constitution that the president nominates a Supreme Court Justice, and that nominee must then be confirmed by the Senate. President Donald Trump nominated Judge Amy Coney Barrett on Saturday, September 26th, and plans to have her confirmed before his first term as president is over, even though some disagree with this notion and suggest that the president should wait until after the presidential election on November 3 to confirm a new Supreme Court Justice.

Amy Coney Barrett is a lawyer, jurist, and academic who serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Barrett studied at Rhodes College and Notre Dame Law School. She is married to Jesse Barrett and has seven children.

The nominated judge is a religious conservative and can be described as a devout Catholic. She has stated that life begins at conception and it is possible that she would vote to overturn Roe v. Wade if placed on the Supreme Court. Barrett has also expressed her other conservative views on topics including the Affordable Care Act and gun rights. The judge is only 48 years old, meaning that she would serve for decades if confirmed. Amy Coney Barrett would be only the fifth woman to serve on the Supreme Court, currently joining Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan. President Trump says that Barrett is very highly respected and is confident in his choice. Her confirmation could make the Supreme Court have a conservative majority of 6 right-leaning justices and 3 left-leaning justices.
