Kenosha Protests

Following the shooting and paralyzation of Jacob Blake, protests broke out in Kenosha, Wisconsin earlier this week. The Kenosha Sheriff’s Department issued a 7 p.m curfew that protesters have defied for almost 5 days.

Jacob Blake, a 29-year-old man, was shot in the back seven time by police officers as he returned to his car after attempting to help break up a fight between two women. A video of the attempted murder has over 9 million views, and has sparked outrage as the officer continues to walk and not be charged.

Reports are unclear on whether or not Blake had a weapon in his truck, but his three sons, ages 3, 5, and 8, were in the car and witnessed the whole incident. Blake is in intensive care and is now doing better, but is paralyzed from the waist down. His family is praying he will be able to walk again.

The officers have yet to be charged, but have been place on administrative leave while the Wisconsin Department of Justice investigates. The officer who fired the shots has been identified as Officer Rusten Sheskey, and he did not have a body cam nor did any of the responding officers. Police cars do have dash-cams, but no information has been released on whether or not the cameras caught the encounter.

Raysean White, who took the graphic video of the shooting, gave a eyewitness account and explained that after stepping away, he saw that officers had Blake in a headlock and was punching him in the ribs and then proceeded to tase him; he then took out his camera after he continued to see Blake wrestle with officers.

These protests come after a summer filled with nationwide unrest and protests following the high-profile deaths of several African American citizens in cities across the country. The increased attention on the Black Lives Matter movement has led to changes in policy in many organizations and companies, and continues to be a focus as the presidential election ramps up this fall.
