On November 11th, 2019, Gaffney High School held a school-wide Veterans Day Assembly for students, staff, guests, and veterans to attend. This assembly was organized in remembrance and honor of all the veterans who fought in the multiple branches in the military throughout time and for those currently serving. This assembly recognized specifically a handful of veterans who are local to Gaffney and the surrounding areas.

The assembly opened with the GHS Band of Gold Prelude of the Grand Ole Flag. The principal, Mr. Erik Gerstenacker, welcomed the veterans, family, staff, and students to the assembly and gave some opening thoughts to tell the significance of veterans day and the importance of recognizing the veterans. The GHS JROTC followed with the Presentation of Colors, while the GHS Choir sang the National Anthem. There was an opening prayer which was led by Pastor Tommy Huddleston from First Baptist Church of Gaffney and was closed with the GHS Choir leading the singing of America the Beautiful.

Mr. George Duncan gave his introductory remarks, where he gave a heartfelt speech of how important November 11th is and how grateful he is for the veterans. Mr. Duncan then welcomed the special guest speaker and Retired Sergeant Major of the Army, Mr. Robert E. Hall. He spoke of his own experiences in the force and even told of how he got recruited. He gave a heartwarming speech, which was followed by the GHS Chorus singing and recognizing the veterans with the Armed Forces Medley, where the veterans stood when their branch of service was recognized.

The assembly lights went down and a video called “I Fought for You” was played. The emotions were high in the auditorium due to the strong message of love, sacrifice, and freedom that were portrayed in this video. The next part of the assembly was orchestrated by JROTC members, along with Claire Cook and Mya Dawkins. Some JROTC members represented the Gold Star Boys by placing the corresponding hat to the plates on the table, while Claire Cook and Mya Dawkins read about the Missing Man Table. The Military “Taps” was then performed by the GHS Band of Gold. The GHS JROTC closed with the Retirement of Colors, which Mr. George Duncan followed with his closing remarks.

The assembly was an eyeopening and heartfelt assembly that truly was an amazing way to honor the veterans who fought for the people of America. On behalf of Gaffney High School, thank you veterans for all you have done for this country.
