South Carolina vs Georgia Game Takeaways
October 17, 2019
This past weekend, 24 point underdogs South Carolina beat the #3 Georgia Bulldogs in two overtimes. This game was a shock to the College Football world, and the Gamecocks showed out against the Bulldogs on Saturday. The win pushed the Bulldogs back to the #10 spot in the AP Top 25.
In the game, the Gamecocks gave up 468 total yards, but the defense was able to contain Georgia’s SEC-leading rushing attack. In prior games, the Bulldogs averaged 250 yards, but were held to 173 versus South Carolina. Before the game, the Bulldogs were favored by 24 points, and were predicted to not even allow the Gamecocks to score double digits. The South Carolina defense showed up in huge ways, as Israel Mukuamu had 3 interceptions from Jake Fromm, and Fromm also fumbled once and the Gamecocks recovered.
Just before halftime, tied at 10, Jake Fromm threw an interception to Israel Mukuamu, who took it to the house for a pick-6 touchdown. The Georgia Bulldogs had more first downs and more yards, but also more turnovers, which gave the Gamecocks the win. Every turnover happened in a key time of the game, and the Gamecocks were able to capitalize after every turnover.
During the 3rd quarter, quarterback Ryan Hilinski hurt his knee and had to sit on the bench the rest of the game. 3rd string quarterback, Dakereon Joyner, filled in for Hilinski with no trouble as the Gamecocks remained poised.
Mukuamu had another interception during the first overtime that could have won the game, but the Gamecocks would later miss a kick off of that drive.
The Bulldogs had 36 minutes of possession during the game, while the Gamecocks only had 23 minutes. The Dawgs had better statistics on offense in every key part, but those turnovers gave the game to the Gamecocks, and led the Bulldogs to their first loss to South Carolina since 2014, and their first SEC East loss in 15 SEC East games. Georgia’s 16-game winning streak at home was also broken.
This Week, the Gamecocks look to their next opponent, the #9 Florida Gators, who they play at home. The Gators are coming off of a 42-28 loss to #5 LSU, and will be looking to bounce back this week against the Gamecocks. The Gamecocks face their 3rd top 10 team of the season, and will look to get 2 upsets in a row this week. Last year, the Gamecocks blew a 31-14 lead in the first half, as the Gators came back to win the game. South Carolina looks to get revenge against the Gators.
