Football Preview: September 13-14

This weekend is a huge football weekend for not only the Gaffney Indians, but also the Clemson Tigers and South Carolina Gamecocks. Friday, September 13, the Indians are taking on Mallard Creek, while Saturday will see the Clemson Tigers face the Syracuse Orange, at Syracuse. Also Saturday, the Alabama Crimson Tide rolls into Columbia to play the South Carolina Gamecocks. All of these matchups are some of the biggest all season, and are huge games to win.

The Indians are fresh off two big wins; one vs Greenwood in Week 1, then beating Union County in Week 2. Gaffney is 2-0, while Mallard Creek is 2-0-1. They tied Dutch Fork 27-27, then beat David W. Butler 33-17, and got a road win at Rocky River 63-21. Let’s just say the Indians have a lot on their plate this week, and could be facing their toughest opponent this year. The Indians get Mallard Creek at home, and look to improve 3-0 on the season.

In other games this week, the Clemson Tigers will travel to Syracuse to face the Syracuse Orange. This game isn’t as significant as people thought since the Orange’s loss to the Maryland Terrapins, 63-20, last weeked. Syracuse has since dropped out of the college football top 25 rankings.

While this game isn’t a top 25 matchup, in the past few seasons, the Orange have shown Clemson that ranking isn’t necessary to cause a scare. In 2017, the Tigers lost at Syracuse, then in 2018, the Tigers almost fell to the Orange again after freshman QB Trevor Lawrence was injured mid-game. Backup QB Chase Brice took over for the Tigers and led them to the win.

Clemson looks to improve to 3-0, and get a big win over Syracuse. The game will be on ESPN’s Saturday Night primetime spot at 7:30pm.

The Gamecocks have a huge weekend, as they are set to take on the #2 Crimson Tide at Williams Brice Stadium. The last time Alabama traveled to South Carolina, the #19 Gamecocks defeated the #1 Tide, 35-21, the only loss Alabama has had in the SEC East since. The Gamecocks are looking to feed off of that motivation versus the Tide on Saturday, as is Alabama.

ESPN has the Tide winning by 25.5 points, and gives South Carolina a 13.8% chance to win the game, and the over/under is 62 points.

This is the first SEC Matchup for both the Gamecocks and Tide, as they look to win the first conference game of the season. Alabama at South Carolina will be televised on CBS at 3:30pm.
