GHS Student Organizes School Supply Drive

GHS Student Organizes School Supply Drive

Lauren Ingle, Staff Writer

Everyone knows at least one person who comes into class unprepared, whether it be without pencil, paper, or even a book bag. This year at Gaffney High school, Ronan Gibson and the student government teamed up to host a school supply drive to make sure all students at GHS are prepared for class each day.

In an interview with Gibson, he enlightened us about all of the aspects that went into having a successful school supply drive. He started the supply drive two years ago, where he focused primarily on the surrounding middle schools. Gibson had not yet started this supply drive at Gaffney High, simply because he was not in high school yet.

Gibson wanted to collect donations of school supplies because he noticed a ton of people came into school unprepared. He also did it for the less fortunate kids who cannot afford them. Gibson believes that this was very successful at orientation, as many people donated binders and other school supplies.

To organize the drive, Gibson had a lot of help. His biggest support is his mother, who helps him with the deliveries and moving the supplies with hand trucks. He believes that the student body president, Ansleigh Touchberry, has really helped get the word out by sharing it on Instagram and Facebook. He hopes that the future student councils will help him as much as this year.

Other companies are also donating to the school, and the Gaffney Ledger also helped get the word out. With increasing support from the school and community, Gibson hope that the school supply drive grows into an annual event. He would like to eventually have a room full of school supplies that the kids could just walk into and get whatever that they may need. Right now if you need something whether you are just unprepared or cannot afford it, you can go to the office in either building and request supplies.
