Not many towns can say that they sport a national park, let alone a national battlefield. So it is an incredibly rare occasion that one does not have to travel to visit a national battlefield. The amount of historical significance that each of these places hold is massive, with each telling countless stories and showing us how we got to where we are. They also hold boundless natural landmarks and beauty. This leads us to our next and quite possible most underrated location in Gaffney: Cowpens National Battlefield.
There are only 11 national battlefields in the United States, and to have one in your own backyard is a privilege. The battlefield often hosts reinactments, which sets a scene as to how life was lived in the days of the Revolutionary war in Cowpens, and even holds a program where actors dress in Revolutionary War attire and perform a twenty-one gun salute with muskets. Guests can roam around the park and ask questions at different stations. For example, if one were wondering what the women did during the war, she could go over to the tent with women dressed up and ask any questions she may have. From women, to drummer boys, even to animals used in the war, Cowpens Battlefield uses each perspective into learning more about the history of the battlefield. There is also a small museum with many displays and exhibits for those yearning for more.
Not into or have an interest in history? Not a problem! Cowpens National Battlefield boasts incredible national beauty with beautiful rolling hills, winding trails, vast fields, and gorgeous scenic views. This is the perfect photo-op for anyone handy with a camera, and a perfect rest stop for those who look to relax. There are plenty of places to hike, bike, and set up your hammock for a nice relaxing evening. For those who love the nation’s national parks, the park can be accessed for free with an annual National Parks Pass.
Cowpens National Battlefield is a staple in our local community, but it seems like the local Cookout grabs more local visitors than the national battlefield. This can be changed with more awareness of the beauty and importance of this important national landmark. This place is a somewhat hidden gem, but only hidden to those who are ignorant of it.
