The Student Body Government: Is Change to Come?

Grayson McDowell, Assistant Editor

The 2018-2019 Student Body Government was elected recently, and the Representatives have hit the ground running.

While the rest of the school was circulating out of traffic or meandering through the halls on Thursday, September 7, excited energy simmered in student government sponsor Dr.  Frank Wilson’s room. The Student Body Officers and Representatives were congratulating each other on well-done campaigns as they took their seats.

Wilson, Stephanie Ooley, GHS English teacher and Student Council Representative, and Dr. David Smith, assistant principal in charge of student government, stood at the front of the room to outline the meeting. The room was packed; every seat was filled.

The Student Body Government is the medium between the administration and the student body. Student Body is an organized group of ambitious students who represent their respective grade levels.

Channeling their drive, the officers and sponsors already have plans to improve GHS this school year. At the request of their constituents, the Student Body has gotten microwaves approved for the cafeteria. The proposal is to place two donated microwaves in the cafeteria for public, general use of students. Students would be allowed to warm their lunches or breakfasts brought from elsewhere. The Student Body would be responsible for maintenance of the microwaves.

The Student Body’s ultimate goal is to revive school spirit and pride. The representatives are currently searching for an artist to refurbish the totem pole sitting outside the main entrance. That totem pole is from the former Reservation and represents the traditions that the school strives to honor.

By the same token, the main event that the Student Body hosts is Spirit Week, the annual celebration of Gaffney High School and promotion of school spirit. Each school day will have a unique theme of dress this year, chosen by the representatives themselves. The exact themes will be announced, as usual, a week beforehand.

The Student Body also promotes its ideals of citizenship, so it will hold voter registration for the general public as midterm elections at the state and local levels draw closer. Representatives will encourage senior students of age to register for voting as well.

The school has changed in more ways than one since last year, and so it will be the expectation for the Student Body to change. The execution of these plans will require the student body’s input and plenty of initiative on the part of representatives. The members may need to reform their constitution to stay effective and keep their ears to the ground.
