A week after falling in the Region 3-5A Championship to the Boiling Springs Bulldogs at its home course, Cherokee National, the Gaffney golf team fired an impressive one under par 287 to win the Upperstate Championship at Fox Run Country Club in Simpsonville. The Bulldogs recorded a 10 over par 298 to finish second.

The Indians were led by senior Ross Jolliff who carded a round of two under par 70. Jolliff began on number eight and was three over par as he made his way to number one tee. “I knew I needed to get hot on my final seven holes,” said Jolliff following the round, “I was hitting the ball well and knew I could make some birdies.” He went on to birdie five out his last seven to finish the front nine in 31. Seth Taylor produced another steady round for the Tribe, posting a one under round of 71. Gaffney’s Cody Transou posted a 72 and Zack Gordon finished the scoring with a 74. “Eighth place was as good as first today,” said head coach Brandon Coggins, “The win definitely gives us some confidence for the State Championship next week.”

As usual, Boiling Springs was led by Georgia commit Trent Phillips’ round of 67, who captured the overall individual title.

In addition to the Indians and Bulldogs, Dorman, Wade Hampton, Byrnes, Rock Hill, Mauldin, and Nation Ford will appear at the State Championship on Monday and Tuesday. The 54-hole stroke play tournament will be held in Charleston at Wescott Plantation.

“I’m really excited for the State Championship, I feel like the team is ready and can no doubt make a run at the title,” said Coggins.

Gaffney looks to avenge last year’s runner-up finish as it begins its campaign for its second State Championship in program history Monday morning at 9:30.
