Meet Taylor Swift’s Upcoming Album: ‘Midnights’
September 2, 2022
This past Sunday at MTV’s Video Music Awards, Taylor Swift announced her tenth studio album during her acceptance speech for Video of the Year. Swift was the winner of three awards at this year’s VMA’s for her ten-minute rendition of her song ‘All Too Well’; taking home Video of the Year, Best Longform Video, and Best Direction.
“I had sort of made up my mind that if you were going to be this generous and give us this, I thought it might be a fun moment to tell you that my brand-new album comes out October 21st“, Swift says with a smile. “And I will tell you more at midnight.” The album announcement was unexpected but an exciting shock to many. And, just as Swift said, she did reveal more at midnight – posting the album name, cover, and themes the album will contain. Fittingly, the album is titled ‘Midnights.’
With thirteen songs, she opens her statement post with, “We lie awake in love and in fear, in turmoil and in tears.” She goes onto write, “This is a collection of music written in the middle of the night, a journey through terrors and sweet dreams … For all of us who have tossed and turned and decided to keep the lanterns lit and go searching – hoping that just maybe, when the clock strikes twelve… we’ll meet ourselves.”
Midnights is set to release this year on October 21st. Much is unknown about the album, going from producers to song titles. It brings a vast number of questions along with theories that have begun to soar from fans surrounding the album. Many speculate about Midnights genre, as Swift has masterfully covered different sounds in her discography. It also brings her last two studio albums to the table: Folklore and Evermore. These have been titled “sister albums”, as they musically narrate stories in a fictional world Swift has created. People wonder if Midnights will be the third addition to the story or if it could bring back Swift’s notable pop sound.
Taylor Swift is an incredibly talented and intelligent woman and artist. Articles headlining her as being the music industry – it’s not a surprise how many records she’s broken. Her albums Folklore, Evermore, and Fearless (Taylor’s Version) broke a record first set by The Beatles last year. These albums got their spot in the number one ranking in 259 days, while it took The Beatles 364 days to get three albums number one in a row. This starts up curiosity on what Midnights will bring for Swift this year; performances, records being broken or even set, and lead singles. Whispers of the possibility of a world tour have started to take place. This would be another unexpected turn made by Swift, who hasn’t been on tour since 2018 for Reputation.
With the description given, Midnights seems to be Taylor Swift’s most intimate and vulnerable album to date.
To conclude her announcement post, Swift states: “Midnights, the stories of 13 sleepless nights scattered throughout my life, will be out October 21. Meet me at Midnight.”
